Free WordPress themes ripoff.

WordPressthemesbase.com is a scam.  Avoid these free themes, unless you want to allow the makers of these themes to place hidden links to websites that sell viagra and other products you may not endorse.  I had previously used one of these themes, and didn’t realize that they had done this.

I wanted a new blog theme, so I did a simple google search for “Free WordPress themes” The number one result was wordpressthemesbase.com, which I had previously downloaded a theme from.  This time, as I was searching the website, I realized there was no ads, so I asked myself “how do these guys make any money?”

After installing the new theme, I was checking it out on the web, when I noticed a link in my footer title “cheap drugs.”  I clicked on it and was redirected to a website selling viagra and other various drugs I don’t endorse.  I would never place this link in a website of mine. Suddenly I realized how they make their money!  The sell these links to these companies.

I thought, “ha, nice try” and figured I would just go into the footer code and remove the link.  I opened the code, and there was an encrypted string of text, making it impossible for me to remove this.  Of course, there is no mention of the encrypted code on their site, or an agreement, that you must accept for the right to use these “Free wordpress themes.”  For this reason, I have placed them on my blog under WordPress theme ripoffs.

The really sad part is, they could probably make more money not deceiving the unsuspecting public.  These are nice themes that I, and I am sure many people would have been willing to pay for.

If you know of more issues, please feel free to comment.

Regards, Muskrat

  1. I found a site that has WordPress Sales Page Templates at http://www.wordpressartist.com. You get 20 sales page templates for $28 with matching blog templates plus they even have an option on how you can get them for free.

  2. I actually found the same thing when setting up a few sites, I downloaded the themes and then noticed some dodgy links. Its actually still quite easy to remove the dodgy link, I wrote on my blog http://petemoran.com/2010/10/01/dodgy-links-in-wordpress-themes/ methods on how to do it!

  3. Seems like a pretty good deal – Does the free option include allowing links on the templates?

    Thanks,
    Chad
